Urology Care, Reimagined

Modern Urodynamics with Connected Devices for In Clinic and At Home

my role

I led design for a patient mobile app, provider tablet app, and the portal. I also created the printed physician reports, App Store launch materials, quick start guides for patients and providers, and marketing assets. I also established the design system and UX standards across all touchpoints.

Description

The Glean platform spans three major user groups: Patients use a mobile app, providers use a tablet app to pair devices and monitor in the clinic or remotely, and urology teams access a web app to review reports, analyze tests, and manage workflows.

context

Traditional urodynamics testing relies on bulky equipment, often confined to specialized clinics and specialists. The Glean system offers wireless sensors that collect urologic data without tethering patients to outdated machines. This system makes urodynamics more accessible, less invasive, and scalable beyond traditional clinical settings. One major constraint: the app and platform needed to maintain functional consistency with prior regulatory submissions (510(k)), requiring thoughtful iteration over reinvention.

Problem

Existing urodynamics solutions are cumbersome, outdated, and confined to specialized clinical environments. Patients often feel discomfort, while clinicians face inefficiencies in setup, data collection, and reporting. Additionally, scaling outside of the clinic is nearly impossible.

How might we reimagine urodynamics as a more intuitive, scalable, and patient-friendly digital experience?

Process

My role extended across systems-level design leadership, regulatory awareness, and cross-platform coordination:

  • Redesigned the entire experience across patient and provider apps using direct input from clinicians and findings from submitted 510(k) documentation, ensuring functional changes remained compliant

  • Introduced new functionality—like paper diary image capture—that required custom flows to extract structured data from photos and populate key fields

  • Led collaborative design reviews with the CEO, Chief Science Officer, CTO, and offshore engineering leads to prioritize features, resolve blockers, and maintain velocity

  • Navigated a tech stack challenge—designing in Tailwind and React conventions while engineering was building in Flutter—by working directly with devs to translate and adapt Figma styles

  • Established scalable design system standards, including naming conventions, UI components, spacing rules, and documentation to support implementation and QA

  • Conducted flow-specific QA walkthroughs after each release, using TestFlight simulations to validate device connectivity, error handling, and test logic across four Bluetooth-enabled devices

  • Prioritized features based on feasibility, regulatory guardrails, and clinician workflows—balancing product innovation with FDA submission consistency

Solution

The final experience delivered an end-to-end platform for modern urodynamics:

  • Patient app: Log bladder events, sync with the Glean device, and complete questionnaires pre- and post-test

  • Provider tablet app: View real-time sensor data, annotate events, and complete exams with wireless freedom

  • Web portal: Access patient history, export PDFs, and view structured reports built from standardized fields

  • Marketing and education materials: Created consistent, on-brand assets across web, print, and app store listings

  • Design system: Built and documented reusable components across mobile, tablet, and web to ensure speed and consistency

Outcome

Supporting a successful Glean product launch across clinic and at-home use cases in summer 2025. More information to come upon release to App Store.
