Description

KardiaComplete is a B2B2C platform that reduces healthcare costs by empowering heart disease patients through personalized coaching, connected monitoring, and clinical support, replacing fragmented programs with an adaptive mobile companion.

context

Every 33 seconds, someone dies of heart disease in the U.S. Despite 80% of cardiovascular disease being preventable through proper management and lifestyle modifications, existing programs fail patients due to high costs, clinical complexity, and lack of personalized support. The Market Opportunity: KardiaComplete was envisioned as a solution to improve patient outcomes while dramatically reducing healthcare costs.

Problem

The Challenge:
Heart disease patients face many barriers to effective self-management: overwhelming medical information, fear of their condition, fragmented support systems, and programs that prioritize clinical compliance over sustainable behavior change.

Critical User Pain Points:

  • Anxiety and confusion about their heart condition and daily management

  • Difficulty interpreting medical data and knowing when to seek help

  • Lack of personalized guidance for lifestyle modifications

  • Generic programs that ignore individual motivations and capabilities

How might we empower these individuals to take control of their heart health through a supportive mobile experience that delivers coaching and care in moments that matter?

Process

We followed a user-centered design process:

  1. Conducted member interviews and surveys to understand pain points, motivations, and inform early concepts

  2. Collaborated with marketing, coaching and clinical leads to align on messaging and outcomes

  3. Created journey maps and low-fidelity flows based on insights from member personas

  4. Iterated on mid and high-fidelity wireframes based on feedback and feature validation studies

  5. Ran moderated usability tests with participants to validate the experience and identify refinements before launch

Outcomes

KardiaComplete pilot was successfully launched in 2021 and more broadly in 2022. The app helps patients better manage their heart health while enabling providers to monitor and support them remotely. We planned to track key metrics to evaluate the app's effectiveness post-launch.

Our north star metric - % active users, with targeted goals based on condition:

  • Atrial Fibrillation: Improve quality of life (QOL) using AFEQT survey; reduce number of episodes and improve symptom logging

  • Hypertension: Increase blood pressure logging and reduce average systolic/diastolic readings

  • All programs: Increase engagement and reduce unnecessary care utilization (ER visits, readmissions)

In addition to clinical outcomes, we also planned to track:

  • Enrollment rates of eligible members

  • Patient adherence to care plans and medication

  • Frequency of device syncs and check-ins

  • Engagement with educational content

  • Patient-reported ease of use and satisfaction scores

Updated Outcomes:

  • AliveCor reports savings of $160 per enrollee per month after one year of use for eligible members with hypertension and/or AFib (AliveCor, 2022).
